Recalculate Fields lets you alter the data for any variable or quota that includes cvalue or selectby tags. It's helpful for recoding existing data when option logic changes or for populating previously blank fields.
To access Recalculate Fields, go to Analyze > Data Management > Recalculate Fields in the survey navigation menu.
Recoding or altering survey data
Recalculate Fields works with the latest published version of a survey.
First, use the Records & Filters to specify which respondents should have their data recalculated. Filters can be combined as needed.
If you check Data Cut, you can select previously created data cuts from a dropdown list to apply. To create a new data cut, click the wrench icon, which opens the Expression Builder.
Next, select the Fields to Recalculate.
Note: In cases where you're recalculating sets of variables where some require others to have answers, you must first recalculate the independent variables before calculating the dependent variables. For example, if after launching a survey you add both an Age variable (QAGE), and a Gender/Age variable (QGENAGE) that is dependent on QAGE, you must first recalculate QAGE before recalculating QGEN_AGE.
Finally, choose whether to Recalculate fields that already contain data. If the option is unchecked, it populates only empty fields, ignoring those that already contain data. If checked, recalculating will overwrite fields that contain existing data.
On the next screen, review the list of fields to be recalculated, then click Re-calculate to continue. If need be, you can cancel the recalculation on the final screen.
After the recalculation process is complete, it's important to verify that the survey's data has been repopulated correctly by checking the data in a report or export.
Tip! When recalculating quotas, only "open" quotas are eligible to be punched. Carefully check all quota caps in the Quota Manager before and after recalculating data.
