What is a survey role?
A survey role grants the ability to perform specific actions within a particular survey.
At IntelliSurvey, we follow the "principle of least privilege." This means granting users the minimum role necessary to perform their survey functions. While it may be tempting to give advanced survey roles to everyone, this approach can be risky. Take a moment to choose the correct role for each survey user.
Tip! Can't tell a role from a right? See the quick guide to user security.
Standard survey roles
The platform has a predefined set of survey roles with varying levels of "power." The most commonly assigned roles are listed below.
This list highlights key rights but does not cover all of them. To view all survey roles and their associated rights, use the interactive Roles and Rights Matrix.
| Survey role | Description of general permissions |
| Limited | This role is for viewing previously saved reports and not much else. |
| Observer |
Observers can be thought of as an "all-access report creator and exporter." Observers can view, create, and export reports with all respondent data, regardless of its source. They can also assign other users a similar, or less powerful role. They cannot approve/expunge respondents, manage quotas, conduct advanced testing, or edit the survey in any way. |
| Researcher |
Researchers are typically external research firms. Researchers can view, create, and export reports with all respondent data, regardless of its source. They can conduct advanced testing, and perform limited ("lite") editing in IntelliBuilder. They can also assign other users a similar, or less powerful role. They cannot manage quotas or approve/expunge respondents. |
| Panel Vendor |
Panel Vendors are usually external field managers that only need to monitor their own panel's fieldwork. Panel Vendors can view quotas for their own panel, but cannot set quota caps. They can view, create, and export reports limited to their panel data, conduct advanced testing, and approve/reject/expunge their own records. They can also assign other users a similar, or less powerful role. They cannot perform TURF or weighting analyses. Tip! To restrict Panel Vendors to their own data in crosslist quotas, use the |
| Panel Vendor+ |
Panel Vendors+ are Panel Vendors with more power. In addition to what Panel Vendors can do, Panel Vendors+ can view and manage quotas for all panels. Panel Vendors+ can also view and download all closed-ended data, but can only access open-ended responses from their own panel. |
| Field Manager |
Intended for internal users responsible for fielding. Field Managers can oversee survey sample and perform management tasks related to fieldwork, reports/analytics, and user administration. In additional to what a Researchers and Panel Vendors+ can do, Field Managers can view and download all respondent data, manage all respondent statuses, manage survey users across all organizations, and change the survey stage. |
| Maker |
This role is intended for survey creators and programmers. Makers have full access to the survey, including editing the source code, managing all non-encrypted survey data, and managing all users. |
Tip! All personally identifiable information (PII) is encrypted by default as well as text fields containing the encrypt: y tag. To view this data, someone on your project team must have special permission. Consider using the add-on role Read Encrypted Data.
