Once terminate tags are added to the survey source code, two variables for tracking the Termination Reason(s) are created. These system variables are disp
and disp_first
. disp
is a multi-punch system variable and disp_first
is a single-punch system variable.
disp
For each termination point, the platform creates a closed-end option for the multi-punch system variable disp
. The disp
variable stores all punches for terminations that a respondent may trigger and is found in the Reporting Field Selector tree, under Appendix > Field Management. It is labeled 'disp. Termination reason' as shown below.
A disp
tile, Terminations, can be found on every Survey Dashboard. It will show a list of all termination reasons specified throughout the survey. The option description for each termination point will be defined by the term text
tag value or the name after the closed-end term instruction. Hovering over the percentage or bar of one of the termination reasons will cause a tooltip to appear, listing the originating question or variable of that reason, along with the term text/description, percentage of respondents who termed for that reason, and the equivalent fraction of respondents that were terminated.
You can also view data for disp
within the Topline reports and Frequency reports. If using the Topline report, the information will be presented in a similar manner as the disp
tile on the dashboard, but the data will be presented in percentages by default. The Frequency report will display both percentages and counts, as seen below.
disp_first
Along with the multi-punch system variable disp
, the platform also creates a closed-end option for a single-punch system variable disp_first
. The disp_first
variable is found directly beneath the disp
field in the reporting tree. It is labeled 'disp_first. First Termination Reason' as shown below.
The disp_first
variable will have all the same options generated in the survey as disp
. However, instead of storing all punches for terminations that a respondent may trigger, disp_first
will only store the first termination option punched by a respondent when a qualification criterion is not met. This is helpful for clients that ask for deferred terminations (e.g., where a respondent is forced to answer all questions in a screener before exiting the survey), and they want to identify the number or percentage of respondents "lost" at each question. The disp_first
system variable will not show on the Survey Dashboard like its peer disp
, but it can be found in the Topline and Frequency Reports, as seen below.
