The Masks applet lets you create short descriptions for question and option text without editing the survey's source code. Masks can be added manually or via AI, simplifying text in reports and exports.
To access Masks, go to Build > Assets > Masks in the survey navigation menu.
Overview
The Masks applet works like the desc
tag but doesn’t require source code access.
- The Masks applet is available to survey Makers, Fielders, and Researchers.
- Masks affect reports and exports, not what a respondent sees.
- It applies to the most recent, published survey. Once the survey is published, masks can be added or modified anytime.
- The Native Description column displays the coded text, but if a
desc
tag or decorator was applied, its text will be displayed instead. - Masks are automatically applied to matching text found across questions and options.
- Overlays (Excel files) can be downloaded and uploaded for bulk, mask editing.
- Invisible questions and variables that are hidden from survey respondents by default (for example, quotas) are automatically excluded.
- Survey content with a
translate: n
tag or decorator will be unavailable.
Using AI to generate masks
AI can quickly generate multiple masks for descriptions over 15 characters. Use Mask Settings to adjust defaults. Select the rows to summarize, then click Generate.
Like manual edits, AI-generated masks apply to all matching text found across questions and options.
Tip! The Masks applet is intended for creating alternate question and option text. To create an alternate question or variable ID, try the alt label
tag.
