Users can edit questions in different ways, depending on the complexity of the edits and their access level. Survey Makers can use both IntelliBuilder and SPL editors and access the SPL view from within IB. Other users need the IntelliBuilder Wording Editor or IntelliBuilder Editor add-on roles to edit in IB, but they cannot access the survey source code or SPL view.
- For simple text edits, click directly on the question text while in either Builder or Preview view.
- For advanced edits — like rich text formatting, changing question types or properties, or modifying question/option IDs — use the Question Editor by clicking the
pencil icon.
- For edits not supported in IB, use Source view to edit the SPL (Survey Programming Language) for individual questions as needed.
Tip! This article is part of a series. If you have not done so already, we suggest reading Creating survey elements with IntelliBuilder before continuing.
Simple text edits
Users with IntelliBuilder Wording Editor add-on role (or greater) can make simple text edits directly in Builder view or Preview view. Hover to highlight editable text, click to edit, then click outside the text area or press Enter to apply changes.
In this view, use keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl-B (bold), Ctrl-U (underline), and Ctrl-I (italics) for simple formatting.
Edits of this nature will be listed as "inline edited" in the survey's Session Activity.
Tip! To avoid losing work, regularly click Save Version to save edits.
Advanced edits - Editing question features
For edits beyond simple text edits, users need the IntelliBuilder Editor add-on role or higher. These users can leverage the Question Editor, which allows you to add, remove, or modify any part of the question, including the question type and ID. Note that changing the question type may remove some properties or attributes.
While editing in this view, click the icon on the question or option text fields to open the Rich Text Editor. It offers basic and advanced formatting, for example, creating bulleted lists or changing font colors. Also, there are options to insert images, hyperlinks, and piped responses.
Changes made from the Question Editor will be listed as "updated" in the survey's Session Activity.
Tip! Question types not supported by the Add Question menu (e.g., MaxDiff) or those with unsupported properties cannot be edited in the Question Editor and require direct SPL editing.
SPL edits
Survey Makers can edit the SPL for individual questions by switching to Source view. Once finished making edits, click the floppy disk icon to save your changes.
Changes made in Source view will be listed as "updated" in the survey's Session Activity.
Tip! If IntelliBuilder doesn't support the needed edits or you want to edit multiple questions at once, switch to the SPL editor.
Toggling between editors
Survey Makers can edit a survey's source code by switching from the IntelliBuilder editor to the SPL editor. After making changes, select Save Version to parse and prepare the survey for IntelliBuilder, or Send to IB to update IntelliBuilder with the new changes without saving a new version.
Saving changes may temporarily lock other collaborators out of editing.
Collaborating using comments
Some edits may be too complex for IB or beyond a user's comfort level. In other cases, users may want a second opinion on changes, like added display logic. In these situations, comments are a helpful way to request assistance, track discussions, or create action items.
