The Files applet is a general file management tool. It supports basic file management operations as well as the uploading and downloading of customized files that are used with your survey.
To access the Files applet go to Assets > Files in the Survey Navigation menu.
Tip! For information on using and adding image files with surveys, see Adding images to a survey (r9).
Overview of folders and files
In the file manager, you'll find folders related to the survey's structure and design as soon as the survey is created. Additional folders are created when specific actions are taken, such as publishing, exporting files, or creating translations. The primary folders are described below.

Contents

---|---|
_s |
This folder contains the file local.css, where any local styles can be defined. It also is where hosted content can be uploaded. Note, any spreadsheets referenced in the survey should still be stored/uploaded in the Sheets applet. |
images | The images subfolder is automatically created under the _s folder when a new survey is created. Any images that will be displayed in the survey should be uploaded here. |
pub | Once a survey has been published, a pub folder will also be created. Each published version of the survey will have its own subfolder. |
theme | The folder where custom theme content is stored. |
Using the file manager
The file manager is composed of two panes. The left pane shows a list of all files and folders associated with the survey, and the right pane is a simple text editor that will display the contents of the selected file.
Toolbar buttons
The toolbar located above the left pane of the file manager provides basic file management actions such as adding new files and folders and copying, moving, renaming, and downloading existing files and folders.
Creating a new folder or file
Folders can only be added as subfolders to existing system-generated folders.
- To create a new folder, select an existing folder and then click the Add new folder button. Choose a name without spaces (underscores are acceptable).
- To create a new file, click on an existing folder and click the Add new file button. The name of the file should include both the file name and file extension.
Uploading a file
The file manager allows you to upload images and other files to the survey file structure. To upload a file, click the Upload files button in the toolbar. You can either select files from your device or drag and drop them into the file manager.
It's recommended to upload images to the images subfolder. This will allow you to use the latest image tags in IntelliSurvey's SPL. For all other file types, use the _s folder or any user-created subfolders within the _s folder.
Moving files
To move or copy files from one folder or another, use the Move to or Copy to buttons. The Move to action will remove the file from its original location, while the Copy to action will keep a copy of the file in its original location.
Caution! If the file already exists in the destination folder, the new file will overwrite the existing file.
Creating a local copy of a theme file
To make a local copy of a theme file, click on the desired file within the directory menu, then click on the Copy to button. In the modal (pop-up), select the top-level theme folder as shown in the screenshot below.
Editing a file
To edit a file, you should create a local copy of it and ensure it is located in the top-level theme folder as described above. Click the file name in the directory menu to open it in the text editor on the right. Once you start editing, you can click Reload to revert to the saved version of the file at any time.
Copying an image URL to clipboard
To reference an uploaded image in the SPL editor, use either the Copy Path or Copy as <img> buttons in the file manager toolbar.
- The Copy Path button will add the image's URL (file path) to your clipboard.
- The Copy as <img> button copies the URL and also includes the HTML wrappers necessary to display the image in the survey.
