The Masks applet allows you to create short descriptions, or masks, for question and option text without accessing the survey's source code. Masks can be created manually or via AI, replacing question and option text with simpler text in reports, exports, and quotas.
To access Masks, go to Build > Assets > Masks in the survey navigation menu.
Overview
- Masks are only available for published surveys.
- Masks do not alter what is seen by survey takers, only what is shown to IntelliSurvey users, and can be added or altered before or after the survey is live.
- The Native Description column displays the current question, row, or option text as coded. If a
desc
tag or decorator was applied to that question or option in the source, its text will be displayed instead. - When the same option (or row) text is repeated throughout a survey, a mask only needs to be created in one location. The applet will automatically apply the masks to the other locations.
- The
translate: n
tag or decorator can be applied to questions, options, and sheets so that the content will be unavailable in the Masks applet. - Similarly, question and variable types that have an implicit
invisible: y
tag are automatically excluded from the Masks applet. This includes all quotas (regular, derived, click balance), variables created withselectby
, coded variables, reporting-only variables, and summary variables. - Excel files known as overlays can be downloaded for users to bulk edit masks for their survey. The overlay can then be uploaded to apply the new masks.
Tip! The Masks applet functions like the desc
tag/decorator and is intended for creating alternate question and option text. If you instead need an alternate question or variable ID, add the alt label
tag to the widget and specify another label to display in exports.
