IntelliSurvey offers two verticalized data export types: Verticalized (Tableau) exports and Verticalized by List exports. This is also known as a long data format. A comparison of the two export options is shown below.
Caution! Verticalized by List exports are currently offered as a BETA release. Cross-check all verticalized by list data with a traditional export to confirm the data's accuracy.
Understanding the concept
In IntelliSurvey's software, "verticalized" data is when the survey question's data is displayed in a single column in a report. The data expands vertically by adding more rows until all the question-related data is represented within the single column. This is the opposite of the more common method of displaying a survey question across multiple columns, where the data expands horizontally by adding columns to the right.
Not all question types can be verticalized. If a question's data format uses a single column by default, then there's nothing to change. We consider this question type non-verticalized.
- Verticalized – Checkbox (multi-select) questions/variables/quotas, checkbox tables, radio (single-select) tables, numeric text tables, content iterated within blocks/loops (including those with radio questions), and rank questions.
- Non-verticalized – Single select questions/variables/quotas, standalone numeric text questions, MaxDiff variables.
- Neither – Non-numeric text field/text box questions, non-numeric text field/text box tables, and uszip5 datatypes.
Verticalized (Tableau) vs. Verticalized by List
The Verticalized by List export primarily differs from the Verticalized (Tableau) export in that it is driven by the selection and verticalization of a single list, as opposed to questions. A side-by-side comparison of these two reports can be found in the table below.
Feature | Verticalized (Tableau) | Verticalized by List |
Report file type |
.csv Three files can be exported: Verticalized, Non-verticalized, and Non-verticalized with codes. |
.xlsx (BETA) A single Excel file is exported. |
Verticalization analysis focus | Any question type that falls into the verticalized category could be the focus. More than one question can be selected. | One list is selected to be verticalized and is the focus of the analysis. |
How the report handles verticalized question types | Question types in the verticalized category can be selected and exported in the verticalized file. |
Verticalized question types that use the selected list are exported by default. Additional questions can be selected to be included at the end of the file. |
How the report handles non-verticalized question types | If non-verticalized questions are selected, they are exported in the non-verticalized files. |
Non-verticalized question types that use the selected list are exported in the main file by default. Additional questions can be selected to be included at the end of the file. |
Development stage | Fully released; improvements still in progress and slated for future releases. | The .xlsx file is a BETA release. Improvements still in progress and slated for future releases. |
