Learning the IntelliSurvey user interface
We suggest you read the following articles if you are using the IntelliSurvey user interface (UI) for the first time.
IntelliSurvey quick start guide
The IntelliSurvey quick start guide will walk you through the life cycle of a typical survey, from survey creation and testing, to collecting "soft launch" data, managing quotas and panels, and running reports. As this is just an overview, links to additional information on each topic are included within the article for more in-depth reading.
Getting started series
The "Getting started" articles provide new users with overviews of fundamental topics so that you can quickly learn how to navigate our UI and begin performing the tasks necessary to run your survey.
- Getting started on the IntelliSurvey platform — If it's your first time using our software, this article will help you get familiar with how to log in and navigate the platform.
- Getting started with the Edit applet (Survey Editor) — This is where you begin in the three-part series, starting with an overview of the Edit applet and Survey Editor. If you are familiar with the Edit applet and ready to add and edit your content, read Creating and editing survey content with the Edit applet. If you are ready to submit and publish your survey, read Submitting and publishing survey content with the Edit applet.
- Getting started with reports — This article details how to create and access reports and export files, plus it provides a quick snapshot of the most commonly used reports in our software. Each report type links to more extensive articles on the topic.
Tip! We'll be adding more articles to this section for various tasks in the near future.
Additional introductory articles
Understanding respondent statuses is a great article to read when you are running your first project and have live data coming in. For example, you can quickly see all respondent statuses aggregated in a bar chart for a given survey's data set in the Status tile on the Survey Dashboard, as well as in various reports.
Also, check out the Reporting Guide for a full, bulleted list of articles related to creating reports, different report types, and additional resources related to your deliverables and analyses.
Learning how to program your survey
The following articles are suggested for learning how to create surveys in the IntelliSurvey platform, either via our SPL or our visual editor interface, IntelliBuilder (IB).
General survey programming
The Getting started with survey programming article offers an overview of how to program and test a survey. It provides information on programming in SPL in the Edit applet (Survey Editor) or via the IntelliBuilder applet, which uses a graphic interface to program surveys. No prior knowledge of our SPL is required to use IB.
If you're a fan of using keyboard shortcuts, we recommend checking out our Keyboard shortcuts article for a list of shortcuts you can use within the Survey Editor.
Programming with IB
The following articles will help you learn how to create and edit your survey in IB. For an overview of the interface, see Getting started with IntelliBuilder.
- Survey elements overview for IntelliBuilder — This article provides an introduction to the various survey elements you can create in IB.
- Creating survey elements with IntelliBuilder — General steps for creating survey elements in IB can be found here.
- Additional survey elements and features for IntelliBuilder — Survey elements and features that may require steps not covered in our Creating survey elements article are covered here.
- Conditioned survey elements and features for IntelliBuilder — This article explains how to create condition logic to use at the question level (as a property) or option level (as an attribute), and provides an overview of the survey elements that often include them.
- Editing surveys with IntelliBuilder — The different ways users can edit survey elements created in IB are covered here.
Introduction to IntelliSurvey's SPL
The following articles will help you learn the basics of our SPL, as well as the terminology IntelliSurvey uses when describing it.
- Widgets — This article provides an introduction to widgets, the standalone elements that make up the content within your survey. They include both respondent-facing (visible) content such as questions, tables, and text, in addition to a survey's hidden content such as lists, default settings, and quotas.
- Questions and variables — In this article we'll explore the basic components all questions include, and you'll learn about the difference between the two main question types, open-ended and closed-ended questions.
- Question types overview — The following article provides an introductory look at common question types and the tags used to create them. It covers both open-ended and closed-ended questions, and uses inline options and standalone list options (a.k.a., setlists) in several examples.
- Table types overview — This is the "sister article" to Question types overview. It explains the common table types and the tags used to create them, along with various examples.
- Lists overview — This article describes the several ways to create sets of elements when building your survey and explains the terminology we use. You'll also learn about the pros and cons of each method.
- Hidden questions (variables) — This article is for learning about the hidden questions types that respondents do not see on screen, such as quotas. You can review each one and follow their respective links for examples and further explanation as needed.
- Tags — This page is a compilation of most of the tags used in our SPL on a daily basis. You can look around and potentially find some good solutions here. Note, this article is constantly evolving, so you may wish to follow it for future updates.
Tip! The terminology used in our SPL matches the IB terminology as follows:
- Widgets are the equivalent of elements.
- Tags are the equivalent of properties.
- Decorators are the equivalent of attributes.
If you are unsure how to program a widget in SPL, try creating it in IB, then switch back to SPL to see how IB constructed it.
