Version Notice: This article covers features in our r9/IS Pro platform. If you're looking for information on this topic related to r8, see Themes.
Themes are the resources surveys use to render HTML and therefore define the visual look and feel of a survey. The Themes applet allows users to view a list of all available themes, preview each one, and see what different surveys look like in a given theme. Additionally, users can view the files from which themes are constructed, as well as add new themes via this tool.
This page covers navigating the UI and the basic functionality of the Themes applet. For information about creating and editing the .tx files that define the themes, see Editing themes.
To access the Themes applet, mouse over the Resources button group in the System Navigation menu and select Themes.
Tip! Preview a survey in any theme by adding a URL parameter to the run link: _tid. The _tid parameter, an acronym for "theme ID," accepts the theme ID as specified in the Themes applet. For example:
https://www.your_survey_domain/dev/your_survey?_tid=series_bluegrad
For more information, see URL parameters.
Overview
The Themes applet launches in the View screen, which has three components: a list of themes on the left, information on the currently selected theme at the top, and a preview window showing example questions using the selected theme.
The Theme Info section provides the following information:
Column | Description |
---|---|
Theme ID | The reference ID of the theme. |
Description | A brief title or description of the theme. |
Inherits from | The theme from which the current theme is derived. All themes are derived from other themes, except for Basic plain. |
Inherited By | The themes derived from the current theme. |
Used by | The number of surveys on the server that currently use this theme. |
Actions
From the applet header, users may perform various actions such as creating a new theme, viewing files associated with a theme, or deleting a user-created theme. The Files and Delete buttons apply to the currently selected theme. The Delete button will only be available for user-created themes.
New
Click this button to create a new theme. Enter a Theme ID and Description, and select a parent theme. The Theme ID and Description follow the same constraints as the Survey ID and Description when creating a new survey. The parent theme provides the baseline from which you can customize the new theme. Once the theme is created, select the Files button to view and edit its files.
View
Clicking this button returns users to the View screen to browse the various themes available.
Files
Delete
To delete a theme, select it from the View screen, then click Delete. A dialog box will appear; click Yes to confirm the theme's deletion.
Note: The Delete button will only be available for user-created themes. Additionally, only themes that are not in use by any surveys can be deleted.
Refresh
Click the Refresh button to retrieve the latest theme information.
