IntelliSurvey returns standard warning, error, and informational messages under various conditions. Users can customize these standard messages and change the wording to suit particular needs and circumstances within a survey. The below messages tags are applied to the app config
widget.
Note: Avoid changing the standard error messages unless there is a special need to do so.
Applying a message tag
To use a message tag and overwrite the system default message, add the message tag to the app config
widget.
Example
appconfig message_errintro: We're sorry, but there was an error on the page. Please clear the error before proceeding:
In the example above, the message_errintro
tag overwrites the default error intro message.
Message tags
The following table contains many of the customizable system message tags, which can be translated for 63 languages. See List of languages and abbreviations for a list of currently available languages for use with IntelliSurvey.
Note: Since every tag allows mixed casing and either spaces or underscores (or neither) between words, there are multiple, acceptable ways to write out the tags listed below. For example, each of the following should work the same:

Message value substitution
The syntax for interpolating values in these resources is based on the sprintf positional substitution to specify the order of the arguments. The syntax for messages is much more limited than the full-fledged features of sprintf, but the basic format to specify position is supported.
Some example message strings include:
q|Please enter a number that has between %1$ and %2$ decimal places.| # message_decimalisin q|Please enter a number between %1$ and %2$ or -%2$ and -%1$|, # message_rangeisin q|Please enter a number greater than or equal to %1$|, # message_rangeisgte q|Please enter a number less than or equal to %1$|, # message_rangeislte q|Please make no more than %1$ selections|, # message_maxchecked
Each of the message templates are predefined to accept a certain number of parameters. For instance, the first example above corresponds to message decimalisin
, which takes two parameters. The first parameter is predefined to be the lower limit of the range, and the second is predefined to be the upper limit of the range. The first parameter will be substituted for %1$
, the second for %2$
, etc.
Suppose there is a need to change the first example to provide the message for message decimalisin
using the following format.
Please enter a number that is less than 20 and greater than 5 decimal places, inclusive.
The lower limit of the range and the upper limit of the range come in the reverse order for the standard message. To correct, change the insertions of %1$
and %2$
respectively.
Please enter a number that is less than %2$ and greater than %1$ decimal places, inclusive.
Now suppose the below format is required instead.
Please enter a number that is less than 20 and greater than 5 decimal places, inclusive. You shouldn't have to go above 20 decimal places anyway.
To accommodate, add %2$
again in the appropriate place.
Please enter a number that is less than %2$ and greater than %1$ decimal places, inclusive. You shouldn't have to go above %2$ decimal places anyway.
Use %1$
, %2$
, etc. as many times as it is needed, in whatever order it is needed. This feature is also useful when translating surveys, as some languages may have a different phrase order to display values for ranges.
