The instructions
tag (alias, instruct
) enables Survey Programmers (SPs) to attach instructions to any question without displaying them in the question text or reports. These instructions can be formatted differently from the question text to make them more noticeable. They can be added to simple question types and are especially helpful for providing extra clarification on complex questions.
Syntax
# In a Question Widget instructions: Question instructions here
Examples
Clarifying multi-select questions
Instructions can be particularly helpful for multi-select (checkbox) questions. Rather than create a lengthier question, the instruct
tag can be useful for clarifying that respondents can select as many options as needed.
Table instructions
Clear instructions in tables help prevent validation errors, which can discourage respondents and lead them to abandon the survey. Combining instructions with validation significantly increases the likelihood of respondents answering questions correctly. Without clear instructions, more respondents are likely to provide inaccurate answers when first encountering the question.
Ranking instructions
Instructions are crucial for guiding respondents on how to answer complex questions, such as ranking questions.
Classes
Sometimes, SPs create a class that is used repeatedly throughout a survey, such as an add to 100 percent table or a checkbox question. The instructions line can be added directly to the class itself so it is displayed with each question where the class is used.
