Users can create a new survey from the HOME page. Set the Survey ID (SID), description, target country, default language, and building method.
Logging in and navigation
Once you have logged into the IntelliSurvey platform, a new survey can be created from the HOME page. Note, if you opened the platform with a direct link to the Survey Dashboard instead, you can find the HOME link in the upper-left portion of the screen. Learn more about navigating between the HOME and Survey Dashboard in the Navigation menu article.
Steps to create a survey
To create a survey, click the New button from the main menu on the HOME page (also known as the "portal" or System Dashboard). Only system roles of Survey Creator+ will see this option in the Navigation menu.
This launches the Create Survey applet in a new tab.
The first field is the ID. The ID is the actual file name of the survey and will appear in the URL when the respondent accesses the survey. The pre-filled ID is only a suggestion and can be edited. The name should be all lower-case and cannot contain spaces or special characters, though underscores are permitted. Once the survey is created, the ID cannot be edited again.
The following fields and menus are located on this screen.
Option | Description |
---|---|
ID |
The file name of the survey, also know as the Survey ID (SID). It should be all lower-case and cannot contain spaces or special characters, though underscores are allowed. Unless specifically requested, it is best practice to exclude the client name and anything alluding to the client from the ID. |
Survey Description |
A short title or phrase whose purpose is to help survey administrators identify the survey. This information does not appear in the survey to respondents, but it is displayed in the blue menu bar after the ID and is visible to all users. If external vendors have access to the Survey Dashboard, it is best practice to exclude the client's name from the ID and description. |
Theme | The survey's display theme. This field defaults to Flex. For more information on themes, see Themes. |
Country |
The main target country for the survey, stored at the respondent level and stored as the system variable base_country . This field defaults to United States.
|
Language |
The primary language used for the survey. All respondent-facing system messages and navigation buttons will appear in the selected language. This field defaults to English (U.S.) and can be independently modified from the Country field. Note the language selected here should be the "base language" the survey will be programmed in before translations. If a survey will ultimately be translated to another language (Spanish, German, etc.) but the questionnaire is in English, set the language to English. |
Editor mode | The method for creating the survey content. Options are Survey Source or IntelliBuilder. |
The Editor mode options have changed recently. Here is a quick comparison:
- Selecting Survey Source opens the Edit applet (Survey Editor) which allows the user to access the survey source code. This is an advanced method and likely the best choice for a Survey Programmer (SP).
- Selecting IntelliBuilder opens the IntelliBuilder applet (IB), the front-end graphical editing tool. This allows a user (e.g., a client) to access, create, review, and edit content without accessing or knowing the survey source code. This is a collaborative method and is the best choice for new, external users.
- It is helpful to know that the selection for Editor mode is not a permanent choice. If a user (e.g., an SP) has the correct permissions, he or she can switch between the two methods as much as needed via the Editor Mode button (see images below).
After filling in all required fields, press Next.
Creating survey content
Once the survey is created, users will be taken to either the Edit or IB applets, depending on the mode selected.
The Edit applet allows SPs to program directly in the editor, or cut and paste content from other sources. To learn more about creating content and editing via survey source code, see Creating and editing survey content with the Edit applet.
Choosing IntelliBuilder brings users to the IB applet in which they can create individual survey elements by clicking Add and selecting from the Add Element menu's list. To learn more about creating content with IB, see Creating survey elements with IntelliBuilder.
