What is a survey role?
A survey role grants the ability to perform a set of specific actions within a specific survey.
A survey role always binds a single user to a single survey: "User X will view reports in the Donut Sampler survey" while "User X will be the survey manager for the "Healthcare survey." Given that a survey role applies to a single survey, it is quite possible (and expected) to have different roles for different surveys: a user may be the owner of one survey, an editor of another, and have the ability to view reports for others.
Any security role brings with it a small amount of risk. There is always possibility that a capable user may make a mistake that interrupts the smooth and secure operation of a survey. To minimize this risk, grant your users the minimum role necessary to perform their survey duties.
Tip! Can't tell a role from a right? Start reading here first. See the quick guide to user security.
Standard survey roles
IntelliSurvey provides a standard set of survey roles for users. To view a list of all survey roles and their associated rights, use the Roles applet. The Roles applet's Roles and Rights Matrix allows users to search survey roles by either rights or roles.
Assigning a survey role to a user
Anyone with a survey role of Panel Coordinator or greater can add new users to a survey. A user can only grant others the same level of permissions or less. For example, a Client Coordinator (CC) can add another CC, but a CC cannot add a Manager.
To assign a user a survey role, expand the Survey button group from your survey Navigation menu. Then, click the Users button. This will bring you to the Manage Users applet and the Browse Users screen for your specific survey. Then, click Add in the blue menu bar.

Choosing the correct survey role
It's easy to give everyone advanced survey roles; it makes user management really easy. It also adds danger. You like living on the edge? You have better things to do. Trust us: you won't like dealing with the cleanup when a user who should only be viewing reports accidentally changes a quota, removes a saved report, deletes a response, and replaces the entire survey with a two page critique of why question 33A1 should be right-justified. We recommend that you brush up on the principle of "least privilege," then spend a couple of seconds to choose a correct role for each survey user. You'll be happy you did.
