Open-end summary tiles are tiles that are included with "iterative" open response questions with two-axes of data, such as tables or blocks where there are multiple variations of a particular question or set of questions. In the case of blocks, summary tiles are labeled as QX_ID or TX_ID, where "X" is the question ID. These tiles may be displayed as either bar charts or grids, and will show a breakdown of all options selected for each row element in a table or each question the block was iterated over.
For example, in the open-end response table T1, respondents enter a numerical response for each row of the table. In a sense, each row acts as its own question. Whether displayed as a bar chart or grid (table), the tile defaults to displaying the average response for each row.
To configure a summary Topline tile, click the Gear icon in the tile's title bar.
This reveals a menu with nested options. These options are:
Display As | |
---|---|
Chart |
Displays respondent data graphically as a bar chart with table rows or the questions that drive a block as the Y-axis. This is the default option for tables. |
Grid |
Displays respondent data as a grid (or table), where counts/percents are displayed per question cell. This is the default option for blocks. |
Chart Title | |
Default |
The default chart title, as defined by the question text, row text (tables), or a desc tag if available. This is the default selection.
|
Custom | Allows users to specify custom text to use as the title. When selected, the Title text field appears, which allows the user to enter the new description. |
Base | |
Total Answering | Selecting this will display all survey data collected for this question (default). |
Select Subset | Allows users to specify which options respondents had to select to be included in tile data. |
Advanced | Allows entry of a custom filter, via the Expr text field, defined using IntelliSurvey syntax. |
Bars |
|
The Bars option is available for open-end summary tiles when Display As > Chart is selected. | |
Average | Displays the average of the option codes for each question cell (default). |
Std. Dev. (SD) | Displays the standard deviation for the set of values in this data field. |
Variance |
Displays the variation for the set of values in this data field. Note: When selected, the Options menu is disabled. |
SD Band | Displays a standard deviation band plot of the data. |
Median | Displays the median value for each question cell. |
Max | Displays the maximum value entered in this data field. |
Min | Displays the minimum value entered in this data field. |
Percentile | Calculates a value for the specified percentile. |
Box and Whisker | Displays data in a box and whisker plot. |
Box (% of Base) | Displays values selected in this menu as a percentage of the selected base size for the whole tile. |
Columns | |
The Columns option is available for open-end summary tiles when Display As > Grid is selected. | |
Average | Displays the average of the option codes for each question cell (default). |
Std. Dev. (SD) | Adds a column with the standard deviations for the set of values in this data field. |
Variance | Adds a variation column for the set of values in this data field. |
SD Band | Adds two columns to the grid - one that shows that subtracts the standard deviation from the average (Avg - SD) and one that adds the standard deviation to the average (Avg + SD). |
Median | Adds a column with the median value for each question cell. |
Max | Adds a column with the maximum value entered in each data field. |
Min | Adds a column with the minimum value entered in each data field. |
Percentile | Calculates a value for the specified percentile, and adds a column with the values matching this percentile. For example if the user inputs "50" the column will display the results at the 50th percentile; the column will have the header "50 %tile". |
Box and Whisker | Adds columns displaying data for the percentiles used in a box and whisker plot (5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 95%). |
Box (% of Base) | Displays values selected in this menu as a percentage of the selected base size for the whole tile. |
Count (N) | Displays a column of the total number of respondents for each option (active by default). |
Colors (Chart View Only) | |
The Columns option is available for open-end summary tiles when Display As > Chart is selected. | |
Default | The default set of chart colors. |
Custom | Allows for alternate colors to be specified in a text field. Acceptable inputs include basic color names (e.g., red, blue) or hex values (#2F4F4F, #D3D3D3, etc.). |
Help | Opens the Topline colors article in a new tab in the IntelliSurvey platform. |

Sort By |
Three selections are available:
|
Sort Reverse | Flips the selected sort order. |
Show Empties | Shows response buckets which have an N = 0 (default). |
Show X-Axis | Turns on the display for the X-axis. The percent of total respondents is shown on this axis. |
Limit |
Enforces a maximum number of response buckets which appear in the graph on the tile. If a limit is applied, the tile will display "(show X more)", where "X" is the number of additional buckets/options not being shown. Clicking on this will cause the tile to display the hidden response buckets. If not selected, the default limit is 150 options. |
Packages |
There are a great many configuration options available for Topline tiles. To make these options easier to manage, it is possible to save sets of option selections so that they may be recalled together. These groups of options are called packages.
|
Filter |
To define a data cut that applies to a single tile only, use Filter. Different filters can apply to different tiles within a single Topline report, as opposed to the data cut defined by the Record Selector, which applies to every tile in a Topline Report.
|
Analyze | |
Compare By |
Compare By is a tool that allows users to view data from a given question through the lens of Comparison Groups created from another question. The comparison groups create an additional axis of data which is used to create a graphical cross-tabulation between the original question and the selected Compare By question. |
Conjoin Columns |
For use with tiles/questions that utilize the same setlists; allows users to "add" one or more tiles' columns to another tile, combining the results in the tile from which the Conjoin Columns > Configure option was selected. The tiles that were combined with the original tile will be hidden until the conjoin is deselected/removed. Available for grids only. |
Indexed Filters |
Indexed filters are a type of data cut. They are designed to allow the comparison of like-for-like responses for different verticals with a single data cut. Rather than create a logical expression for each question row or question column in the Data Cuts applet and manually apply each one to its own Topline tile, an indexed filter can automate the process. It only requires a single expression to be written, and automatically tailors the expression to each column or row within the tile to which it is applied.

Not all options are available for limited reports users for security reasons.
