To access display options for open-end numeric tiles in a Topline report, click the Gear icon in the tile's title bar and select Display As.
Display As
There are four display formats for open-end numeric question types - Descriptives, Density Chart, Histogram Chart, or Bar Chart.
Descriptives
Open-end numeric tiles default to the Descriptives view. This display option provides an overview of commonly used statistics related to that question's responses, starting with the Average (mean), Median (middle value when listed in order), and Mode (most frequent value). Next the Min., 25th Percentile, 75th Percentile, and Max. are listed, values that are all used to create box-and-whiskers charts. The Standard Deviation (Std. Dev.) and Variance are included as well.
When exported to an Excel file, these values may then be copied and pasted to other files as needed. Both a table of the values and a copy of the tile are included in the Excel file.
Weights are not applied to open-end numeric tiles. For more on weighting respondent numbers, click on using weights.
Density chart
This display type uses R to plot a density chart and create an SVG visualization of the results.
Histogram chart
This display type groups the data into potentially useful ranges of integers to construct a histogram graph.
Histogram charts add an additional submenu option to the tile menu, Bins. For more information on these options, see below.
Bar chart
This display type will show a single bar with the number of collected records. Bar charts default to displaying the average response value as indicated in the upper right hand corner of the tile.
To display a value other than the average, select Gear > Bars, then choose another display option. See Bars below for more information.
Additional options
The following options are also available for open-end numeric Topline tiles.
Chart Title | |
---|---|
Default | The default chart title, as defined by the question text, row text in the case of a table, or a desc tag if available. This is the default selection. |
Custom | Allows users to specify custom text to use as the title. When selected, the Title textbox appears, which allows the user to enter a new description. |
Base | |
The Base is available for open-end numeric questions when Display As > Bar Chart is selected. | |
Total Answering | Selecting this will display all survey data collected for this question (default). |
Select Subset | Allows the user to specify response options to be included in tile data. Respondents must specify a start (From) and end (To) to the options; options inbetween cannot be skipped/excluded. |
Advanced | Allows entry of a custom filter in the Expr text field, defined using IntelliSurvey syntax. |
Bars |
|
The Bars option is available for open-end numeric questions when Display As > Bar Chart is selected. | |
Average | Displays the average of the option codes for each question cell (default). |
Std. Dev | Displays the standard deviation for the set of values in this data field. |
Variance | Displays the variation for the set of values in this data field. |
SD Band | Displays a standard deviation band plot of the data. |
Median | Displays the median response value for each question cell. |
Max | Displays the maximum value entered in this data field. |
Min | Displays the minimum value entered in this data field. |
Percentile | Calculates and displays a value for the specified percentile. |
Box and Whisker | Displays data in a box and whisker plot. |
Box (% of Base) | Displays values selected in this menu as a percentage of the selected base size for the whole tile. |
Colors | |
The Colors option is available for open-end numeric questions when Display As > Histogram Chart or Bar Chart is selected | |
Default | The default set of chart colors. |
Custom | Allows for alternate colors to be specified in a text field. Acceptable inputs include basic color names (e.g., red, blue) or hex values ( #2F4F4F, #D3D3D3, etc.). |
Help | Opens the Topline colors article in a new tab in the IntelliSurvey platform. |
Bins |
|
The Bins option is available for open-end numeric questions when Display As > Histogram Chart is selected. | |
Default | Allows the system to determine how to group the data into bins, displayed as bars. |
Size | Provides a text field in which the user may input a value to define the distance between min and max for all bins/bars; e.g., "10" means that the system would use the smallest and largest values and create bins of 10, one for each interval. |
Custom |
Provides a text field in which users may input a string to define the min and max of all bars; e.g.,
|
Count | Allows the user to indicate the number of bars to show in the histogram, then allows the system to determine how to group the data into this number of bins. |
As with other Topline options, Bins configurations can be specified in the survey source via the reportoptions: Bins => { Size => { Size => '20' } } reportoptions: Bins => { Custom => { Range => '..10,11..50,51..' } } reportoptions: Bins => { Count => { Count => '4' } } |
|
Packages |
There are a great many configuration options available for Topline tiles. To make these options easier to manage, it is possible to save sets of option selections so that they may be recalled together. These groups of options are called packages.
|
Filter |
To define a data cut that applies to a single tile only, use Filter. Different filters can apply to different tiles within a single Topline Report, as opposed to the data cut defined by the Record Selector, which applies to every tile in a Topline Report.
|
Analyze | |
The Analyze option is available for open-end numeric questions when Display As > Bar Chart is selected. | |
Compare By |
Compare By is a tool that allows users to view data from a given question through the lens of Comparison Groups created from another question. The comparison groups create an additional axis of data which is used to create a graphical cross-tabulation between the original question and the selected Compare By question.

Not all options are available for limited reports users for security reasons.
