Closed-ended questions may be displayed in various ways in Topline reports, depending on the question type and data collected. Closed-end questions may be categorized as Single Data Axis tiles, Two-Axis (Summary) tiles, or Three-Axis tiles.
Single data axis tiles
The most common type of closed-end questions are single data axis questions. These questions automatically render tiles as bar graphs, and display as percentages. The total respondent count in the data cut for the report, n, is displayed in parentheses in the title bar next to the question label. Options are ordered by counts: those with the greatest counts appear at the top, and are then listed in descending order. If there are more options than can fit within the graph, they are not all shown, and a message indicating the number of excluded options is included on the left hand side of the graph (near the Y-axis).
The options (or bins) will display either their actual option names or names provided via the desc
decorator. Hovering over one of the bars in the graph will display information about that option, including the option ID number and name, the percent of responses, and the number of responses out of the total respondents.
There is a lot of flexibility in how closed-end Topline tiles display data. For more information about configuring tiles, see Closed-end single-axis tile display options.
If the tile is for a quota, the prioritization scheme in use by the quota is described beneath the title as shown below. Dragging the cursor over the name of the scheme reveals the scheme definition. For a list of scheme definitions, see selectby.
Single data axis tiles can also be displayed as pie charts. To switch to a pie chart, click on the Gear menu, and select Display As > Pie Chart.
Two-axis (summary) tiles
Summary tiles display data from questions with two axes. Such questions may be tables, and so the tile aggregates all question-cells into a single tile, rather than display a separate tile for each row or column. This applies for both closed-end and open-end numeric question tables. Open-end text entry tables where the input data type is not strictly numeric will not display as summary tiles. Instead, these will create a single word cloud tile per question-cell. When the data is closed-ended, the default display configuration is as a stacked bar graph. This gives insight into counts per selection for each question-cell.
Questions repeated in a block (loop) also display information in this way, as the question repetitions create the second axis of data rather than creating a new Topline tile for every question iteration. Such questions will display the question label in the heading of the tile with the block iterator _[ID] - e.g., Q6A_ID as shown below. Open-ended questions in a block will not display as a summary tile, unless they are numeric and have a predefined range of acceptable values.
On the right side of summary tiles there is a color key with buttons for each option when the bars are set to Stacked (shown) or Clustered (by selecting one of those options from the Gear > Bars menu). Clicking the option buttons will toggle whether to show or hide that response from the summary tile.
Summary tiles may also be shown as grids (tables). While in a grid view, users may select multiple cells at once to copy and paste their contents into a spreadsheet instead of having to export the full table as an Excel sheet. To select multiple cells, click in the first cell then hold Shift and click in the next cell that defines the boundary of the cells you wish to copy. In the example shown below, the user would have first clicked in the Adidas-In the last 2-3 years cell, then clicked in the Puma-In the last 4-6 years cell to select the cells that are highlighting. The same highlighting can be achieved by click and holding to drag across multiple cells and highlight them. Then to copy and paste, use the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V key commands, respectively.
To learn more about the display options for summary tiles and how to tailor them to meet a particular need, see Closed-end two-axis (summary) tile display options.
Three-axis tiles
Some tiles display three axes of information. This is either because the question for which it reports is a closed-end or open-end numeric multi-column table where a response is given for every cell, or because the question is a two axis table in a loop, adding a third axis through iteration. In such cases, data is presented only as a grid, where each cell contains a number value. See Three-axis tile display options for more information about customizing what values are displayed.
Toggling and sorting columns
It is possible to sort, show, or hide columns within a grid by selecting the downward-facing arrow which appears when hovering-over a column's header. Clicking the arrow reveals a menu in which users may Sort Ascending, Sort Descending, or alter which columns are displayed via the Columns option. Any columns that are checked are displayed. To hide a column, uncheck the box to its left.
Columns are sortable for both two-axis and three-axis grid tiles.
